For decades, the Americans with Disabilities Act has created equal opportunities for all Americans who have a disability or a mental health condition. Established on July 26, 1990, the ADA is a crucial component of civil rights in the country, proclaiming legislation and accommodation for those who need it. As we celebrate the anniversary of the ADA’s 34th year of existence, we must understand that all Americans deserve equal workplace and community opportunities.
Jarrad Rankin, Vice President of Operations, shares his thoughts on what the ADA means to him. "Access to employment, community, and technology is a basic civil right for all of us, especially those with disabilities. Perhaps the most impact has been made in the area of assistive technology. Since the ADA came into existence, the number of advances in this area are astonishing."
In partnership with the U.S. Department of State, each organization works daily to ensure everyone has equal opportunities. As of February 2023, participation rate for those with disabilities raised to 40% compared to 36% in February 2022.
However, work still needs to be done to achieve a solid level of equal opportunity. According to Americanprogress.com, it’s noted that those with disabilities are more likely to receive lower pay resulting in an inability to afford necessities for daily living, such as healthcare, clothing, food, and shelter.
