INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Rehab Medical, Inc., a national complex rehab technology (CRT) company, and Servants at Work (SAWs), a faith-based non-profit organization, concluded its 3,000th ramp build campaign on August 14th after more than 20 participants from SAWs and Rehab Medical gathered to build a life-changing wheelchair ramp for Indiana resident Dorothy. For more than a year, Dorothy has struggled to leave her home due to a lack of proper accessibility equipment.
“Seeing over a dozen Rehab Medical employees come out early on a Saturday morning to give their time and energy to someone in need fills me with so much pride," said Rehab Medical President Kevin Gearheart.
"Giving back to others is the epitome of the “Improving Lives” mission we strive to embody.”
Suffering from severe medical conditions that have limited her mobility, Dorothy relies solely on her sister and primary caretaker, Betty, to complete daily tasks. Prior to Dorothy receiving her wheelchair ramp, her only attempt to leave her home was by backing a van up to her front porch, which failed without a proper ramp to access the van. Since then, Dorothy has never been able to leave her home in fear of an accident from the lack of mobility access.
"Gratitude seems to simplistic a word for all the support that made this day a milestone event," said SAWs Executive Director Bob Richmond.
"So many individuals came together for Dorothy and for the SAWs mission to improve one life by constructing a ramp and made a valuable impact on someone. It was a humbling experience for everyone involved."
As friends, family, neighbors, and volunteers gathered toward the end of the build, they watched as Dorothy independently exited her home while reveling in her newfound freedom. To conclude the milestone build, Pastor Eric Burton-Krieger, Board President of SAWs recited a prayer for Dorothy wishing her much success with her new mobility freedom and Jeffery Burgin, Mayor's Neighborhood Advocate and assistant to Mayor Hogsett said a few words about the importance of coming together as a community to support each other. SAWs was then presented with a check for $8,500 from Rehab Medical to continue its mission to provide wheelchair access to low-income families in need.
SAWs received an overwhelming amount of support in its effort to raise $30,000 in donations but are still short of their goal. Visit the SAWs 3,000th ramp build donation page to support the organizations mission of offering life-changing accessibility equipment to all in-need mobility users.
